The play Melissa is performing in the night Eve takes over her consciousness contains a fair dose of intentional irony. The opera is set in medieval times Melissa plays Eva a young woman whom a prince named Edward is madly in love with. Eva is considered by everyone to be evil. The play opens with a scene in which Edward is begging his father for Eva's hand in marriage. He tells his son, "I forbid it! You know very well what will happen if you do! Those who succumb to her beauty all die in horrible ways!" Edward explains that Eva is the one who has suffered after the deaths, trying to reason with his father. The king will have none of that, though, and demands that Eva be burned at the stakes. At his point Edward dramatically exclaims, "Father! If you are sentencing Eva to death... then I ask that you take my life along with hers!" Eva then begins her soliloquy: Se II Amore Sta Vincino Original lyrics Se io sono quello che mi dicono
Quanto crudele dio
Che mi ha dato la vita Credimi
Io sono una povera donna
Desiderando il mio amore No--
Anche se nessuno mi crede
Se il mio amore sta vicino a me
Volentieri ricever alsiasi punizione
Per favore, Dio
Senti le preghiere di questa povera donna.
English translation If I were how everyone says I am
Then how cruel is God
Who has given me life Believe me I'm just a pitiful woman
Who's merely thinking of the man she loves No--
Even if no one believes me
If my beloved is by my side
I would gladly accept any punishment
Please, God
Hear the prayers of this poor woman.
At the start of the song, Eve meets eyes with Aya. Her brown eyes change to emerald green. She glances at her cast member and lights him on fire. She continues to sing the song while igniting the panicking people in the audience. So Eva really was evil! :P |
